CORNISH PASTY FILM SELECTED BY COUNTY FILM FESTIVAL

A film which demonstrates the Cornish passion for pasties has been selected for screening at the 2010 Cornwall Film Festival (5th- 7th November). The film, entitled The Cornish Pasty, was produced by members of the Cornish Pasty Association (CPA) to support its PGI application to protect the Cornish pasty. The CPA film will be eligible to win The Delabole Slate Audience Award and The Golden Chough Grand Prize.

The short film, which has been selected for a special screening of Cornish interest films: Cornishcopia, had its first public screening at the Royal Cornwall Show in June and over 1,900 people have already viewed it on YouTube. The CPA will now show the film at schools and other venues across Cornwall.

Larry File, Chairman of the CPA, said: “We are thrilled that our film has been selected for this year’s Cornwall Film Festival. It has grown to be a very prestigious event and we are very pleased that more Cornish pasty fans will be able to see it. We hope this will also help to educate more people on the importance of protecting one of Cornwall’s most famous food products and what it means to the county.”

The film includes interviews with local people about why the Cornish pasty is important for Cornwall and features a demonstration of how to make a traditional Cornish pasty. It was commissioned to support the CPA’s application for PGI status for the Cornish pasty and comes as the case is published in the Official European Union Journal. This puts the Cornish pasty closer to achieving the same protected status as Champagne. If no objections are raised from other member states (outside the UK) in the next six months it will mean that only Cornish pasties made in Cornwall and to a traditional recipe will be called ‘Cornish Pasties’.
